Sam Himself reaches great new heights on sensational 2nd LP, "Never Let Me Go"
Following his critically acclaimed record Power Ballads (2021), Sam Himself has managed to outdo himself on his newest effort, Never Let Me Go. Keep reading as we share our complete thoughts on the album, as well as a background on this talented artist.
From the genius mind of Sam Koechlin who’s best known as Sam Himself comes his sophomore record called Never Let Me Go in which he’s created this relaxed yet extremely intriguing vibe from beginning to end. On our initial listen, it’s like a masterful blend of The National and The War on Drugs, however he’s infused his own personality and individual style for something completely new. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed it on repeated listens and cannot wait for everyone out there to slip into this album experience.
With the help of his longtime producer Daniel Schlett, the two have collaborated and ultimately succeeded on their vision to give the listeners a cohesive and well thought out record. On the background of it all, he’s said that it’s a “soundtrack for the first day after what looked like the last”. Lyrically speaking, there’s a ton of moments and specific passages on songs like “My Great Escape” and “Heartland” that effortlessly paint a picture as you connect the dots. Furthermore, this record sort of feels like it comes in waves in terms of energy and depth. One moment you’re immersed into the vulnerability of the words and the next you’re single handedly rocking out and playing the air guitar to songs like “Baby’s Eyes”. The versatility is endless and it’s a focal component of what we love so much about this.
At 10 songs total, you truly get a little bit of everything rock-related across the spectrum of sound and style. However, the one consistent has to be Sam’s vocals which undoubtedly add that “special sauce”, edge, and attitude to everything. They’re mature, warm, and inviting, but also tone setting in their way to draw you in. Considering that he’s just announced the first leg of his European tour in early 2023, there’s no doubt in our mind that these shows are going to be transcendent and intimate. With more to be announced soon enough, it’s a great time to hop on the bandwagon of Sam Himself.
