One of our personal favorite duos, Ryal, have returned with another emphatic and vibe-filled single titled “What I Mean To You”. We love it! Keep reading for an in-depth look into the track, as well as an update on the band.

For those who might be out of the loop, Ryal are a synth and electronic duo made up of Jacque Ryal (vocals) and Aaron Nevezie (production). This time around, they’ve teamed up with Dan Rieser (drums) and John Davis (bass) to craft up this electrifying new single they’ve titled “What I Mean To You”. Immediately sensing it as a step in the right direction, especially since our last review of their song “By The Minute”, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed our repeated listens. We’re urging everyone to celebrate release day with a listen as soon as you can.

Like all of their music, they never skimp on putting together lyrics that truly embody a personal touch. “What I Mean To You” according to Ryal is about dealing with“ a relationship on the brink of breakup” but the artist ultimately “reaches in” to save it with safety and love. What we particularly liked about this song compared to others is that there’s this sort of atmospheric flow through the delivery of the vocals. You hang on every word but also somehow feel like you’re floating on a cloud as Jacque carefully exudes each line. Paired with the airy and light production, we honestly love this more relaxing and calming version of the band. That’s not to say their other tracks get aggressive, but this particular sound fits the mood so unbelievably well.

Another major standout for us was the inclusion of what feels like decades spanning on influence and inspiration. We get a touch of dream pop that shimmers in at particular moments, adding such a wonderful and complex layer into everything you’re hearing. We wouldn’t necessarily call “What I Mean To You” an outlier in their growing discography, but it stands out in an almost unexplainable way. Whatever label you’d like to put on it, just know that it’s as original and fresh sounding as you can get.
