Pretty Little Thieves do no wrong on stellar debut EP, "Half"
Kicking things off on a high note, Pretty Little Thieves’ latest EP Half has surpassed any expectations we had and instantly become a favorite. Please read on with us as we break down our complete thoughts on the record, as well as a background on the band.
Made up of J.R. Ross, Travis McGuire, and recently recruited drummer Devin White, Pretty Little Thieves have been steadily making a name for themselves since their 2019 SXSW Exhibition show. Playing shows whenever they can, the band finally enlisted a wonderful production team to get this debut Half off the ground. Thankfully they did, because it is absolutely killer.
To no surprise in the slightest, existing fans are calling it “a perfect soundtrack to the summer after a sullen year in quarantine”. To be completely honest, we couldn’t possibly agree more with that statement. Fusing so many genres under the rock umbrella is not what we were expecting, but it’s what was delivered and it is mighty tasty. Little glimmers of standard indie rock, surf rock, and notes of garage have made for an impeccable debut from a band that we sincerely can’t wait to hear more of in the near future.
For the lovers of 60’s psych, catchy hooks, and empowering harmonies, Half is for you. Typically we would recommend you start with a particular song, however because the EP is only 5 songs, do yourselves a favor and start with the opener “I’m Your Enemy”. That single alone was enough to hook us in and not lose our attention until the final moments on “Where’d You Go?”.
It would legitimately be a difficult task if someone asked to point out any negatives here. Seriously, this is just the type of free flowing and jammy music we listen to in our free time, so the best case scenario really happened for us all here. It’s not only an EP that we’re obviously recommending everyone give a listen to, but a band that we (and you) will be following for the rest of their career. It appears they’re based out of Austin, Texas, which means a road trip is in order once more shows get scheduled!
With all that being said though, do not skip over Half, you’d really be doing yourself a massive disservice if you did so. We’ve provided all the important links below in order for you to listen and follow along for all future releases. Enjoy!
