PENNER shares her emotionally charged single & video for "Criminal Daydreams"

Review by Austin Sher

Back with an all new single and music video for “Criminal Daydreams”, we’re thrilled to be reviewing this wonderful release from PENNER. Read along with us as we share our thoughts on the track, in addition to a background on the artist herself.

Elisa Annis, also known as PENNER, has just released an indie pop acoustic EP, Wandered Too Far along with a music video for the EP's leading song, Criminal Daydreams. With so much more in the works already, she is already back in the studio working on a “sonically expansive” pop EP that's slated for a release sometime in 2021. We loved “Criminal Daydreams”, so more on the way from the artist is definitely something positive to look forward to this year.

On “Criminal Daydreams” specifically, the song stems from a personal experience that the artist went through and the lyrical content within the track alludes to the fantasies of getting sweet revenge on the man who once said, “I do”. Once you’ve matched up the immense amount of emotion and lyrics to the way that everything is delivered, the song takes a step up in how truly hard hitting it really is.

As a fairly straightforward indie pop single, PENNER absolutely knocked this one out of the park. It features everything you could want in a single of its caliber; diverse instrumentation, soaring vocals, and a story that comes from experience. From a songwriting standpoint, it’s incredibly well put together in terms of pacing and inventive lyrics. It paints the picture of the difficult night that the artist had to go through, and by listening, almost puts you in the place of where you could imagine being there.

With all that being said though, we hope we’ve made it clear that this is a song (and EP) that is surely worth your time, we’re highly recommending it. As soon as you listen to the song though, don’t forget about the video that brings life to the entire situation. We always like to recommend building out the story in your head by listening before watching, but there are no rules here, so enjoy both!

Lastly, and as mentioned before, we’re seriously looking forward to the new release coming this year from PENNER. Growing as an artist is something we know will happen with more experiences under her belt, so we’re quite positive that this could be the best work yet. In the meantime though, listen to discography released thus far, it’s fantastic.
