Paper Citizen crafts a lush sound on latest single, "Indigo September"

Freshly released on March 26th, 2021, Paper Citizen is back with an astonishing new single, titled “Indigo September”. We are loving it! Read along with us as we share our thoughts on the track, in addition to an insight on the artist.

Led by Singaporean singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Claire Gohst, her indie rock project Paper Citizen is shaping the genre for the better. While she proclaims it as “indie rock for a lost soul in a new world”, we truly can’t help but agree after listening thoroughly. Based out of Los Angeles, she’s blending up crisp vocals, hard hitting lyrics, and a spacial sound that is a serious breath of fresh air.

Set for release on April 23rd, 2021, her upcoming album Wandering Gohst is guaranteed to be incredible if “Indigo September” is any representation. On this track specifically, Gohst let us know that the track “is a feeling of being in an emotional flux that’s a careful dance between facing fear and finding serenity. Just as still waters run deep, we relish the beauty of its superficial truth and leave love’s fiction unwritten,”.

We’ll be completely honest, this was our first foray into the music of Paper Citizen, however, it 100% will not be our last. As lovers of all things with an indie sound, she’s seriously managed to blow us away with this singular track. Sweeping soundscapes, a lush vocal representation, and a massive dose of realness and ingenuity were put into this single and it so clearly shows. If anything, it’s got us incredibly excited for Wandering Gohst to see the light of day. We have a feeling it’s going to be huge.

Seeing as though she’s classically trained in basically everything music related, we’re not surprised the song came out as smooth and productionally sound as it did. Taking influence from the likes of St. Vincent and Andrew Bird, we couldn’t help but hear a similar strong structure and cadence to those artists. They’re some of our favorites as well, so of course we had to judge a bit harder, but Gohst is really just that good.

There really isn’t much else to say here, other than we are obviously highly recommending all the listens to “Indigo September”. We don’t want to further spoil your next favorite song, so just take our word for it and get listening as soon as you can.

Additionally, keep yourselves in the know and check out the rest of the greatness she’s released as well. It’s all beyond quality and really gives the impression and shows the evolution of her sound as an artist. In the meantime though, kick off a listen with the latest single. Enjoy!
