Only Okay shares meaning behind his latest EP, "Four Joints" - Interview
Less than a month since Only Okay’s latest EP Four Joints dropped and thankfully we got the wonderful opportunity to speak with the man behind the music. Please enjoy our full interview below.
Currently based out of Detroit, Michigan, Only Okay is the solo project of rapper and songwriter, Griffin Shiminski. Showcasing a seemingly infinite amount of styles on his newest EP Four Joints, we got a much needed background on how exactly this record was created, a peek into his process as a musician, and a very detailed plan for 2023 that’s going to include a massive amount of new music. If this happens to be your introduction to the artist, we’ve found this to be a great starting point to explore more.
Always trying to hit the goal of creating music with a purpose, Four Joints hits the mark beautifully in doing so. We spoke about it more in-depth, but from what we understand, ultimately this record revolves around the extreme injustice so many incur around marijuana laws in the United States. It’s best explained by Griffin, but he makes a valid point as to just how insane it really is. Putting the message aside for a moment though, the EP holds four dynamic songs that skillfully show off his many capabilities as a multi-talented musician and songwriter. The words come from the heart, but it’s really his effortless flow that gives their meaning an extra necessary “oomph” when delivering.
Seeing as though Jay-Z is a major influence on his work, it’s not hard to spot the similarities, yet still Only Okay manages to create something wholly original and fresh for himself. At right around 12 minutes in runtime, we stated our only real complaint is that we wish it were at least double the length. Looking towards the future though, there’s going to be no shortage in the slightest come 2023. Only Okay’s planned endeavor is to release an EP per month for the entirety of the new year, which if you know anything about music creation or production, that’s a seriously tall order! With that being said, we are 100% looking forward to more, but still recommend you begin your journey with a listen of Four Joints.
