Nine Days' John Hampson talks revitalization of single, "Absolutely (Story of a Girl)" - Interview
Over the last 23 years of the song’s existence, there’s a better than zero short you’ve heard “Absolutely (Story of a Girl)” from Nine Days. Well, we got the wonderful opportunity to speak with the frontman John Hampson to get an inside look on the revitalization that the song is experiencing.
Best known for this mega hit that still occasionally pops in our head or sends us on a nostalgia trip of the early 2000’s, John Hampson of Nine Days is experiencing what any artist could only dream of. At the moment, this song is living a second, third, and fourth life due to becoming a vital part of one of the most talked about movies in years, A24’s Everything Everywhere All At Once. It played a major role itself in the movie, which we highly recommend viewing, but the track is also about to be used in the upcoming Apple TV+ series, Shrinking, starring Harrison Ford and Jason Segel. The episode is out on February 3rd and we’re urging everyone to enjoy that as well.
While we covered many different topics during our conversation with John, obviously this song was the focal point. More specifically though, we spoke in-depth about a ton of similar songs that are experiencing rehashings based on either using moments of the song or completely revitalizing it. For example, there’s a critically acclaimed queer pop singer/songwriter named JORDY who just unveiled his new single “Story of a Boy” on Thursday, 1/26. The song interpolates “Story of a Girl,” but with same-sex pronouns for an inclusive, modern version of the Y2K classic. Nine Days loved JORDY’s version, so much so that Hampson makes a special guest cameo in the music video.
Looking forward now to what John has been up to, as of recently he’s signed with Mojo Music & Media, the global independent music publisher and legacy marketing company, last year. He mentioned that as an artist, it’s truly impossible to turn off those creative instincts in your head, which is exactly why he’s continued on in creating solo work among songwriting for other projects.
