Night Owl previews album "Empress" with all new single, "The Great Beyond"
Serving up his first new music in nearly two years, we’re thrilled to announce that Night Owl is back with an outstanding single titled “The Great Beyond”. Read on for a closer look into the track, as well as a much needed background on this talented artist.
From the mind of Cincinnati-based Rob Mohan comes his musical project that he titled Night Owl. Following up 2020’s What Good News Will This Morning Bring?, the artist has made his valiant return with a heavily folk-inspired single called “The Great Beyond” that amplifies his clever songwriting, a vibrant instrumentation, and ultimately left us feeling quite optimistic by the final notes. If this happens to be your introduction to his music, we’re highly recommending that you start here and work your way backwards.
Similar to the works of Jackson Browne or John Fahey, Night Owl has still managed to carve out something incredibly unique and hone in on his signature sounds and essence. As this is actually a preview of his newest album Empress that’s going to be an ode to Cincinnati, lyrically speaking it’s drawing from personal experiences and situations while living in his new city. Knowing his background a bit and this being from the perspective of moving from San Francisco, we can only imagine the major shift in lifestyle he’s experiencing during his move back. “The Great Beyond” does an impeccable job of walking you through it all, but is also up for interpretation for all those who dare to connect the dots within his words.
With the help of Billy Alletzhauser (guitar/bass) and Todd Drake (drums), the collaborators have absolutely excelled on the instrumentation end that left us being quite inspired. This song does such a great job at feeling intimate in its message but also expansive in its sonic nature. We found ourselves quietly rocking out and moving around during the more explosive sections of the song, but “The Great Beyond” also found its way back to a happy and even keeled baseline to round out our initial listen. As the release of Empress approaches, we’re sincerely looking forward to seeing how the rest of the record shapes up in its tone, mood, and storylines!
