Meika deliver an inspired performance on outstanding album, "Shimmer"
Simply blowing us away from beginning to end, the band known as Meika has surpassed all expectations on their record, Shimmer. We are loving it! Read on for a closer look into the album, as well as a background on the project.
Led confidently by vocalist and composer Emmie te Pas, finally she’s conducted and released the new album titled Shimmer from Meika. Spanning a massive amount of styles that embody different types of Jazz, glimmers of R&B, and a whole lot of signature essence that gives the listen personality, we were immediately enthralled with everything thrown our way. For those who like their music beautiful, experimental, and daring, look no further because this album is 100% up your alley.
Spending time between New York City and in the Netherlands, so much experience from Emmie has come from living her life and infusing herself into different music scenes. The closest comparison we can find for this sound is a band called Hiatus Kaiyote who are some of our favorites, however Meika’s complete style has somehow leveled up due to its complexity and dense feeling. At 10 songs that span right around 50 minutes in length, undoubtedly it’s one of those experiences that has you immersed into everything as opposed to just listening to single after single. You get inundated with everything you need to know on the title track “Shimmer” and the band whisks you away with their instrumental prowess as the album takes shape.
An unexpected and major plus for us was the unbridled amount of soul, passion, and sheer love that you can feel emanating from each and every song. Although it’s recorded music, there’s also a serious intimacy about it, almost as if you’re in the room experiencing a private show. The production is top tier and the mixing is excellent, further letting those specific instruments pop and have their shining moments. We’re always major suckers for a powerful horns section and from start to finish Shimmer delivers so big on those grand and emphatic moments. By the end of our first runaround, honestly we didn’t want it to end. We know for a fact we’ll be coming back for more and are already patiently waiting for a follow up record whenever that may come.
