Matthew Liam Nicholson previews "The Worm Turns" off upcoming LP
With his first single release of the year, Matthew Liam Nicholson has created something truly transcendent in sound and genre with “The Worm Turns”. Please read on for our full review of the single, in addition to a background on the artist.
For this Australian-born and California-based artist, he’s been on quite the tear in the last year in terms of single releases. His latest musical experience titled “The Worm Turns” is a psychedelic journey through space and time that tickles the senses from start to finish. As this was our first introduction to the artist, we didn’t quite know what to expect, but he left us feeling joyful and optimistic with this release.
Embracing all things indie rock and taking a slight turn from his last release, he’s showing a different side of himself ahead of his newest record, Universal Outsider. Due out sometime later in 2022, this is the third single released thus far. Says Matthew on the background of this track though, “‘The Worm Turns’ is a luminescent, rhapsodic anthem for our collective ordeal of global awakening, during these extreme and difficult times”. That is quite the way to word it, however after listening through multiple times, we get it.
What is actually a lyrically profound song covering deep themes within its story, it actually juxtaposes everything with its easy breezy feel. It definitely airs on the side of calm relaxation at times, but once that infectiously catchy chorus hits, it’s like the listener gets raised up in all the positivity. You’ll experience sweeping guitar passages, an atmospheric element, but also just a really great dose of artistry from a musician that we can’t wait to follow along on his journey.
As mentioned, this was our intro to Matthew’s tunes, but with his discography building up, it appears we’ve got some further exploring to do.
