Manfilth succeeds on exploratory debut album, "Cocoon"
Embracing the darker side of things, Manfilth has just released his unbelievably complex debut record, Cocoon. We are loving it! Read along with us as we share our complete thoughts on the record, as well as a background on the artist as well.
Manfilth is the solo work of Marcel Welz in which he has displayed the ultimate intrigue and intimacy on this expansive record, Cocoon. Exploring a multitude of genres within the umbrella of Metal music, this record takes truly epic twists and turns, but also puts on display the pure talent that the artist has proved to be capable of. We couldn’t help but instantly resonate with this album.
Prior to the review, we got a much needed origin story on Cocoon in which Marcel let us know, “Cocoon is my debut album and introspective journey of a man who decides to go on a journey of betterment, but also a journey of confrontation with everything he has spent his life burying and avoiding. A place, where he, but most of all nobody else can see his flaws. He has spent his entire life in pretense. So much so that the act is fooling even himself now. In his little make-believe-reality he felt safe, secure and sheltered but he also felt self-absorbed, isolated and lonely.
Thankfully we got that important precursor to the record, because it hit that much harder after our initial listen. We’ll let you know that this is 100% a complex listen. The album comes in at 15 songs, spanning a little over an hour in run time, however it is absolutely worth every second of your listening. For so many, Metal is a genre that gets dismissed and can become difficult to explore, but we love it and this is an amazing representation of how one person can share their important stories in a way that is personal to them.
Really though, there aren’t enough good things that we could say about this. It’s an overly impressive album that features stunning instrumentation, vocals that will leave you jealous, and production that allows you to hear the most important parts. Picking out a single song to choose as our “favorite” would be close to impossible as this is more about the experience of everything from start to finish. Each song is complex and different from the last, but clicking play at the beginning and experiencing it as a whole is really the way to approach Cocoon.
It should probably go without saying, but this is an album and an artist that we are highly recommending for all to check out. Even if Metal music isn’t necessarily your favorite genre, it’s still worth exploring and diving into it. We loved this record and confidently think you will too. Enjoy!
