Dazzling us almost beyond words, the second overall EP from Maejis Mind titled At Water has arrived and it’s excellent. Read on for our glowing review of the record, in addition to a much needed update on the artist.

Creating a slight departure in sound from his psychedelic rock-focused works and incorporating elements of more pop and R&B, Maejis Mind’s latest project At Water is sensational. Having reviewed his double single release “What’s Worth It” and “Dizzy” last year, we’ve been patiently waiting for his inevitable evolution in sound, and this has more than delivered. While there’s certainly a shift in sound, the psychedelic roots have implanted themselves and we’ve gotten to see much more of the artist in terms of production and creativity.

On the background of it all, he’s telling a story of “accepting the passing of memories and facing loss”. At three total tracks, spanning right around seventeen minutes, you’re immediately immersed into atmospheric overtones and soundscapes that seem endless on the surface. Opening it up with the near seven minute thriller “Watch The Rain” was close to a transcendent experience and legitimately made us lose ourselves in the music. Considering that the latter half of the track is mostly a reverbed guitar solo, there’s something so special about it that didn’t make it feel stale one bit.

We were extremely hyped on the singles we reviewed last year, but there’s something truly different about this set. You can feel a real growth in Maejis Mind’s growth as an artist, but also on the composition end on structuring these songs. The vocals are never overpowering and in fact take a back seat at times to allow the rest of the instrumentation to breathe. Every risk taken was met with a reward and you can’t help but finish the listen thinking that this is every bit as flawless as other highly revered records. It comes in at under twenty minutes, but you honestly never want it to end. Thankfully if you’re just discovering the artist’s music for the first time, there’s plenty more to dig into, so we’d highly suggest you do that if you enjoy At Water.
