Love Ghost capture emotion on genre-diverse EP, "Tales of a Sad Boy"

Kicking off their year on a real high note, Love Ghost have just delivered an outstanding new EP titled Tales of a Sad Boy. Keep reading as we share our thoughts on the record, in addition to an update on this band.

It’s been nearly six months since we last reviewed Love Ghost and their single “Big Dog”, and since then they’ve been incredibly busy on the path of creating more inspiring music. On the band’s newest EP called Tales of a Sad Boy, they’ve collaborated with New York emo rapper Big Boss Mulaa for a group effort that not only transcends their sound, but solidifies them as an emerging force in the industry. We’ve loved our multiple listens and cannot wait for everyone out there to dig in as soon as possible.

For those potentially out of the loop, Love Ghost is made up of Finnegan Bell (lead vocals, lyricist, guitar), Daniel Alcala (guitar, engineer backing vocals), Cory Batchler (keys, bass, backing vocals) and Daniel Gallardo (drums, vocals). On the EP, it comes in at four total tracks that infuse a wide variety of sound, style, and genre, however put a ton of direct focus on vivid and imagery-filled lyricism. As a band, they’re specializing in pop punk to a degree, but the emo side of things assuredly comes out as you connect the dots within their words and the overall tone of these hard hitting tracks. With help on the production side from Mike Summers (Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne), everyone involved on this project 100% had a vision from the beginning and we feel as though everything has been fulfilled beyond their expectations.

Although we wish it were at least double the length, we prefer quality over quantity. In this scenario, it’s an ideal entry point to the rest of their discography because each of these songs sonically feel different from the last. At the same time though, there’s a cohesiveness running through from song to song giving off that coveted “album experience”. You get sucked in through a semi-spoken word opener, and Love Ghost only continues to hit euphoric and expressive highs from there on out. Without spoiling much else, Tales of a Sad Boy is absolutely a specific vibe and aura of a listen, and we already know we’ll be coming back for more soon enough.
