La Palma craft absolute greatness on 2nd LP, "Moonflower"
With its official release coming today on April 1st, 2021, La Palma have just shared their sophomore record, Moonflower. We are loving it! Read along with us for our in-depth review of the record, as well as a refresher on one of our favorite blossoming bands.
It has been exactly 2 years to the day since La Palma began working on their sophomore effort, Moonflower. Let us kick things off right away by letting you know that it was time well spent. Capturing their experiences that include a pandemic, global unrest, raising kids, and moving cross-country, this record encompasses everything beautiful and wild about the journey of life.
In case you don’t remember, it wasn’t too long ago that we covered La Palma’s teaser track for the record, “Sábado". Thankfully though, the time has come and the full release has seen the light of day. Filled with beautiful layered textures, a classic yet futuristic indie sound, and a wide array of instrumentation, “Moonflower” is everything we’d hoped it would be. Tonally and sonically, the album’s sound could not have come at a more perfect time of the year, at least where we’re located. The sun is starting to shine, the days are getting longer, and we think we’ve found the ideal record to continually put on repeat.
With a vinyl release set for sometime in May, it’s definitely something we’ll be on the lookout for, however that’s not going to stop us from streaming the record infinitely. As lovers of all things that fall under the indie rock umbrella, La Palma has gone ahead and explored close to every notable subgenre here. Bits of dream pop and psychedelic pop seemed to show themselves the most, but whatever labels you want to slap on the sound, it really doesn’t matter because it’s just so listenable. The washed out vocals featured provide such a mood while the grand instrumentations seem to take over at times. If we had to pick a setting to listen to this in, it would be at a park on a springy summer day with a bottle of wine. This is the type of record that’s begging you to get lost in it.
At 12 total tracks in length, each one wonderfully blended into the next and made for a truly cohesive listening experience. While the blending of tracks was certainly there, there was also more than enough differentiation that didn’t make you feel like it was the same song over and over. They’ve really managed to take the best of the genre and boil it down to one lovely listen. We really don’t want to sound like we’re overhyping, but the album just let us with a huge smile on our faces.
With all being said, it should come as zero surprise that this is something we’re recommending you get into. No matter the setting or time of day, Moonflower needs to be the next record you get into. Enjoy!
