Karelia's Discord's Zephios takes a closer look at album, "ASPHYXIA" - Interview

Celebrating the release of their incredibly impressive record ASPHYXIA, we got the chance to hear all about it from Zephios of Karelia’s Discord! Please watch our full interview with the artist below.

Currently based all the way in Aberdeen, Scotland, Karelia’s Discord are consistently aiming to think outside the box when creating their niche sound. In our eyes and ears, they’ve certainly surpassed that goal on their all new album ASPHYXIA, a piece of art that feels more like an audible journey rather than a standard record. We spoke with front man Zephios who kindly took us on an adventure through the creative process, nailing down exactly what genre and style this embodies, and so much more.

On the background of this record, Karelia’s Discord has said that they “took the Japanese Visual Kei inspiration as our texture palette and mixed it with our own sound to create something for ourselves”. During our extended conversation, a portion of it was dedicated to the ongoing stigma and stereotypes surrounding “metal” music. Considering that this band is very hands on using a DIY attitude, ultimately their goal is to express themselves within a sound that’s completely unique to their own. Although they’re still working out the kinks of getting together and playing live, plus solidifying members, the core group has been going strong since 2017, and has so much more on the way that we’re sincerely looking forward to. Honestly though, using the word “unique” or “inventive” only scratches the surface of the sheer beauty and originality that ASPHYXIA brings to the table.

Through 7 songs and 25 minutes of runtime, the band has absolutely created a definitive and somewhat signature sound that sounds like nothing we’ve ever experienced. Sure, we could recommend a song or two to familiarize yourselves with, but this album is best enjoyed untouched from start to finish. We can virtually guarantee you’ll be immersed immediately, bordering on awestruck by the time it wraps up. We truly cannot wait to see what the rest of 2023 has to offer for Karelia’s Discord.
