Jordan Bussell releases her flawless debut album, Wolves and Curses
Review by Austin Sher
Coming directly from the Southwest of England, Jordan Bussell has recently released her lush new album, Wolves & Curses. Read along with us as we given an in-depth review into the record, as well as a bit of background surrounding the artist.
Topping a little over an hour runtime at 15 total songs, Wolves & Curses is an impeccable debut album coming from Jordan Bussell. We truly loved what we heard, but before we get into the music, we’d love to provide you with a short bio on the artist you’ll be listening to. Jordan is an independent artist from close to the middle of nowhere in the South West of England and has a dark and powerful style of songwriting that, as Sarah Gosling of BBCIntroducing SouthWest describes it, “seems to capture the wilderness she grew up in”. She is a jack of all trades musician, as well as a sound engineer, she writes, performs and produces all of her work entirely solo, right down to the mix/master process, out of her small unsophisticated home studio.
If you’re not familiar with the mixing, mastering, and overall production of an album, let us be the first to tell you that is quite the complicated process. Bussell really captures the independent musician essence by taking things into her own hands to create such beauty. That comes not only in the form of the powerful and unique lyrics heard on the record, but in the entire process as a whole.
Jordan really has created a story in sound, for any listener who likes their music with some poetry and their lyrics to tell a tale, this is a call back to the days of albums being painstakingly crafted collections of connected songs and won’t disappoint. Wolves & Curses truly is one of the most unique things i’ve heard in a while, and I mean that in the best way possible. Each song effortlessly flows from track to track filled with emotion, heartfelt lyrics, and a story that is begging to be told.
Getting into some of the tracks, some of our favorites included the opener “Sleepwalking Too”, “Burn Down”, “Don’t Wanna Know”, and the album closer “Be Still”. Obviously this is not to say the others weren’t as good, but these were the standouts in terms of vocal range, diverse instrumentation, and overall storytelling. One of the most unique things about the record is that you almost fall into a trancelike state listening to the stories but at the same time getting lost in Jordan’s voice. Her voice was such a standout across the entire hour and it really made us a fan after the first song.
The acoustics on the record were near flawless, it was original and pure as far as an indie record goes. It kept up the spirit of what should be displayed in today’s music and it was so densely packed with emotion in the best way. We’re really looking forward to watching the blossom of Jordan Bussell’s career and we urge you to take the time and listen to this album!
