John Murry teases single "I Refuse To Believe (You Could Love Me)" off forthcoming record
John Murry has certainly been busy so far in 2021, and even more so with the release of his stellar new single, “I Refuse To Believe (You Could Love Me)”. Please read along for our full featured review of the track, as well as a background on this clearly talented musician.
Released on Submarine Cat Records, Mississippi born John Murry has let out another teaser track from his upcoming album The Stars Are God’s Bullet Holes, titled “I Refuse To Believe (You Could Love Me)”. Produced by John Parish (PJ Harvey, Eels, This Is the Kit) at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth, we’re fairly certain this may be the best of the bunch so far. If anything, it’s got us looking forward to the record and counting the days until release!
On this newest track specifically, you can hear Murry venturing into the realm of unexplained disappearances – an English aristocrat and an Australian politician: “Lord Lucan, he could not tread water / Prime Minister Holt? He never came up for air.” Taking influences from Ric Ocasek of The Cars, he writes from a headspace of if the artist had been into a sort of UK Surf sound. Wherever the influence has stemmed from, we can confidently state that he’s grasped greatness with it.
We’ll be quite honest as this was our first introduction to the music of John Murry, however it will not be our last. Taking liberties with his overall sound and grasping for complexities throughout, it’s a sound that we quickly grew to adore and wanted more of. Thankfully the record is on the way so we won’t have to wait too much longer, and even better, there’s a back catalog for us to get through while we wait.
Without a doubt this is an experimental take on an indie rock sound, but paired with Murry’s clearly distinctive vocal output and some quirky post-production techniques, it works in the best way possible. Having listened to the other released singles, we think this is the strongest output so far, but cohesively once we listen to the entirety of the album, there’s no doubts the cohesiveness of it all will shine through.
At this point we’re not going to spoil anything else for you, but we would love for you to give a listen as it is extremely deserving! We’ve found an artist we love and will be counting down the days until release.
