Making a major move from Toronto to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music, we can confidently claim he’s on the right path because all of his releases thus far have been stellar. On John Conlin’s second single of 2022 called “Hopeful Romantic”, the artist has taken a “maximalist approach” to pop music that’s reminiscent of the early 2010’s but still managing to carve out a futuristic niche for himself. Since it got sent our way, it’s been on constant repeat, so go ahead and do yourselves all a favor by giving it a spin yourselves.
At just a shade under four minutes in runtime, Conlin’s “Hopeful Romantic” feels like this fully fleshed and complete work that’s allowed him to showcase himself as both a storyteller and composer. It has the upbeat vibrance of your classic pop track, but with an introspective flair that gives all who are unaware of the artist a chance to get to know him and his personal experiences. With an eclectic instrumentation that leans heavily on pulsating synthesizers and an over the top production from start to finish, ultimately we found that Conlin’s vocals were the necessary constant that held it all together. He’s really toed the line of keeping things emotional and expressive, all the while crafting up a jam that makes you want to let loose and jam it out in the process.
