Joey Gonzalez makes his return with personal new single, "Over Me"
Review by Austin Sher
Released today on August 14th, Joey Gonzalez is back with yet another impressive single, titled “Over Me”. Read along with us as we break down our thoughts on the track, as well as provide an update on the last time we covered the artist.
Delving into a very personal topic of life with this tune, 2020 brought great change to most in our world dealing with a pandemic, political unrest, and racial injustice. A special wrinkle to this year for Joey was a divorce and finding a way to ensure a smooth transition for kids and us parents alike. Towards the end of that season of life, this song came like a Godsend helping him begin that journey of rebuilding and finding his own path again and eventually risking again for the sake of love and life.
One of the main points that Joey wanted to get across with the release of “Over Me” is that, “If you're struggling in love, find some hope and energy in these 3 minutes to keep walking. There is life after pain, hope in the brokenness and strength in the imperfect process of rebuilding.” With those words and with the lyrics presented, it almost feels as if one of the best ways to cope with the problems in your life is to not worry about what you can’t control, but to get your feelings out in the form of music, especially with such hard hitting lyrics.
One of our favorite parts about Joey’s music is that at the end of the day, he’s singing from experience and straight from the heart. While the song certainly sounds and gives off the feeling of being uplifted, the lyrics still cut deep. The stories being portrayed are those that were lived first hand and by listening to the song, you’re getting a direct connection not only to the artist, but the events that they’ve experienced thus far in their lives.
Taking away the lyrics and focusing just on the music, we truly feel that this may be Joey Gonzalez’s best release yet. The absolute standout on the track was just how dynamic his vocal range was. Comparing to our last review of “24 Seven Fight”, our immediate thoughts were how smooth Joey sounds here and that all the high notes were hit with pure ease. If the vocals weren’t enough to sell you, obviously the next thing you’ll notice was how inventive and booming the drums were on the track. While guitars felt like they took a back seat, we think that may have been for good reason.
All in all, this is a straightforward rock song that we hope takes Joey’s career to new highs. Honestly, we think you’ll enjoy it no matter what, it’s just an infectious sounding song that deserves to be listened to loud and proud. With that being said, get listening!
