Jim Duff shares an astonishingly serene new single, "Solid As A Rock"
Review by Austin Sher
Shared recently with the world, Jim Duff has officially debuted his slow burner of a single, “Solid As A Rock”. Please do yourselves a favor and read along with us as we share our thoughts on the single, in addition to a background on the artist as well.
It was in the year 1991 that Jim Duff set out to fulfill his musical journey, however, it would take over 20 years for him to finally be able to write and play the music that is his. Now it wasn’t because of some recording contract restrictions, but because of Jim's relentless quest of what he calls, "the pursuit of individual freedom." Jim would use the tools of capitalism to obtain his ultimate individual freedom, which in this case, became the songs that he wrote and would continue to write for years to come.
Fast forward to today and his present day musical style is now emulating many of the artists in his record collection, such as Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Billy Joe Shaver, John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, and so many more. Jim is combining traditional Country ballads with flashes of Southern Rock and Blues that come together to create a sound that is both familiar, yet refreshingly new.
On his latest single, “Solid As A Rock”, it’s so easy to hear all the wonderful influences that Jim takes into consideration as he crafts his own signature sound. On this single specifically, it checks all the boxes we look for when reviewing what we consider to be a great song. Kicking things off with the strum of his acoustic guitar, Jim’s voice quickly guides us to a calming sense of relaxation and sincerity. While his vocal delivery is more on the rustic side of things, it overall fits so well with the themes and overall atmosphere created on the track.
As soon as our first listen of “Solid As A Rock” finished up, we had no choice but to immediately and check out the rest of Jim’s discography. To no surprise in the slightest, it delivers in all the right ways. Once you finish your own personal listen up, we suggest going through his most recent album, Send My Soul To Texas. It was a thoroughly delightful listening experience that was sure to calm the day’s nerves.
While this was our first dive into the music of Jim Duff, let it be known that it certainly will not be our last. We’ll be keeping a close eye on what’s to come, and we suggest you do as well. For those lovers of Country, Blues, and everything in between, this is absolutely the next artist you need to be adding to your listening queues.
