Jessamine Barham pivots her sound on lyrically inspired single, "Locked Door"
Nearly a year and a half has passed since we last reviewed the work of Jessamine Barham, but thankfully, she’s made her way back with an inspired new single, “Locked Door”. Keep reading for a closer look at the track, as well as an update on the artist.
Currently representing the music scene in San Diego, California, Jessamine Barham is an incredibly well-rounded artist who dabbles in genres spanning from alternative to folk to metal. In this case though, her newest single “Locked Door” is sort of an amalgamation of styles that includes touches of Hip Hop, spoken word, and beyond. Whatever label you’d like to put on it, just know that we’re recommending everyone to give it a spin whenever you can.
On the background of it all, “Locked Door” is a thematically charged track that speaks on “politics and how people naively believe things without doing their own research”. Although the song is quite short at just a tad over a minute in runtime, what it does best is not wasting a solitary moment in covering a topic that we firmly believe in as well. With the way the internet and world really are, it feels as though we have to double check everything that crosses our path nowadays. Facts are presented and immediately believed due to “trustworthy” sources, but what “Locked Door” preaches is to take those sentiments in stride and figure it out correctly. It’s 100% a less covered topic in music as a whole, but one we’re proud to write about and back up on Jessamine’s end.
Comparing it directly to what was presented to us on Light in the Darkness, sonically it’s a much different representation of her sound that we were initially expecting. That EP was an interesting mix of chamber pop, but what “Locked Door” has done for us is show us a much different side and set of skills that Jessamine Barham is capable of. If our only real “complaint” is that the song was too short, then we’d say she’s doing pretty well overall. Glimmers of Hip Hop and borderline rapping were surprises as well, but given the production and instrumentation on the song, it fits ever so perfectly in the grand scheme. Not to spoil too much else, but we sincerely hope you check out the links below to listen, follow along, and of course to stay tuned for hopefully much more on the way!
