James Mercer releases the next of his 'trilogy' album releases with latest, "Embers"
Review by Austin Sher
With his first full length album release of 2020, James Mercer is back with his newest, Embers. Read along with us as we dive deep into our thoughts on the record, as well as a bit of background on the artist as well.
Currently based out of the United Kingdom, James’ release for Embers is actually the second of three albums that will be released to form a trilogy of albums. He’s currently working on the followup album which will end the aforementioned trilogy of albums (Burn, Embers and Ashes). Those will be released next year. You can find Embers on Spotify and Apple Music.
We can always appreciate the work of an artist who likes to think ahead. The thought process goes that if you liked the first album, then you’ll definitely want to stay tuned for the rest. In this case we’ve hopped into listening to Embers, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Now it’s our mission to go listen to the back discography, as well as having something to look forward to with all his planned future releases!
Coming in at a track length of 12 at a runtime of 51 minutes, James tells a multitude of stories throughout the record. We put on the record with no expectations and not knowing which genre or paths it would take us down, but if you’re a fan of fun and catchy indie pop, this is absolutely the album you need to be listening to.
The obvious highlight of the album was James’ vocals and delivery from the first to last track on Embers. He without a doubt proved his range on so many of the singles on here. Our personal favorite songs on the album were the opener “Feel Good”, “Over My Shoulder”, and “Home”. This isn’t to say that we didn’t enjoy the rest of it, but like any great album, there’s always those songs that stand out for each individual.
While we don’t want to give too much away on the album, because what would be the fun of that, we highly recommend and encourage you to take the time out of your day and listen. It doesn’t matter if you’re driving, going for a walk, or working, this is the type of music that can be listened to at any time or in any mood of the day.
