HYG deliver on instrumentally stimulating record, "EP 2"

Nearly four years since their debut EP, HYG have finally made their way back with an outstanding new record, EP 2. Keep reading for a closer look into the record, as well as a background on the band.

All the way over in Canberra, HYG are made up of Mark Wilson, Oskar Urbas (bass), Lucius Culliton (drums), and eventually recruiting Sean Ryan on keys. Together, they’re creating an incredibly diverse blend of music consisting of krautrock, electronic, and jazz fusion which has fully rounded out the sound on their eclectic record, EP 2. Having now listened through a few times, it completely aligns with our personal preferences of music and we can’t help but overwhelmingly recommend everyone out there to give it a spin as soon as humanly possible.

Coming in at just three total tracks, HYG have still managed to infuse a seemingly infinite amount of ideas, motifs, and imparted a signature essence on EP 2. Kicking things off with the opener “Memory of Flight”, they instantly set the tone with a slightly psychedelic disco jam that perfectly sets the base for what’s to come. A recommendation for all would be to enjoy this with a nice pair of headphones, because the subtleties within the production and their instrumentation pop that much more when you’re immersed in the sound. If there’s one thing that HYG has going for them, it’s that extremely complete and larger than life sound that they give off on each piece.

As the record goes on, they continue to introduce new ideas that are a bit low key on the acoustic side but still ultimately lively with the addition of reverberating synthesizers. Our usual reaction when it comes to shorter based records like these is that not enough ideas are able to come across, but they’ve proved the complete opposite. You’re captivated by constantly changing twists and turns, you’ll undoubtedly find yourselves grooving and moving, but your interest is continually piqued. Keeping a listener’s attention nowadays as our attention spans shrink is so incredibly difficult, but it’s records like these that are actually challenging that break the mold and reignite our faith in music going forward!

Now while we’re unfortunately so far from Canberra over here in Los Angeles, we’ve heard rumblings of their live show being quite impressive too. Here’s to hoping the band makes their way out here one of these days. While we patiently wait though, please go ahead and check out the links below to listen, follow along, and of course to keep up with all future releases and information.
