Humdinger explode in sound on decade spanning self-titled EP

Aiming to switch things up within the rock genre, Humdinger have succeeded in creating something completely unique on their self-titled EP. Please do yourselves all a favor and check out our review below, in addition to a much needed background on the band.

We don’t know what’s in the water down in Canberra, but as of lately, there’s been an outrageous amount of amazing music being sent our way. In this scenario, Humdinger have just let loose a decade spanning EP infused with many styles, genres, and inventive motifs to solidify themselves as ingenious thinkers. Made up of Lucius Culliton (Drums/Percussion), Liam Johnson (Drums), Dom Gorman (Bass/Backing Vox), Ansel Luk (Electric Keyboard), and Sam Carl (Vox/Guitar), the five piece have more than impressed us with their debut effort.

Recorded with just three members but now expanded their live lineup to five, it’s honestly difficult to wrap your head around the fact that so few people were able to accomplish such a grand sound. Coming in at 5 total tracks that runs around 15 minutes, it’s this concentrated burst of power, energy, and creativity that flows seamlessly from one song to the next. Sure, it’s certainly rooted itself in rock and roll, but what had our attention piqued the most was how there managed to be so many callbacks to the rock of the 60’s and 70’s. A major standout was of course their inspired cover of “Johnny B. Goode”, but the others so perfectly blended ideas from the past with sounds and tones of the modern.

A resounding feeling and mood that Humdinger holds is its constant playfulness from beginning to end. The songs themselves are generally upbeat and vibrant, but something that you can’t really recreate is the sheer amount of passion and love that comes through in the vocal deliveries and instrumentals. The band has been making waves in their local scene with bombastic live shows, and we hope to be able to see it all go down one day, but even listening to these recordings over and over give the listener an idea for what they can expect. The liveliness presented on the opener “If This Is Love” is really all you need to hear in order to let the rest of the EP play untouched.

So with all that being said, just know this is 100% something that we’re recommending and urging everyone to check out. Go ahead and listen, follow along, and stay tuned for more by clicking the links below.
