Dogboy go above & beyond on outstanding debut, "That's What We Wanted"
A sincerely upbeat, vibrant, and thoughtful listen from beginning to end, Dogboy have outdone themselves on their latest single, “That’s What We Wanted”. We are loving it! Read on for a closer look into the track, as well as a background on the band.
Immediately begging the question, “Ever wonder what it’d sound like if Shel Silverstein fronted an indie rock band?”, the band known as Dogboy answer quickly with their surf rock-inspired poetic pop punk sound. On the group’s debut single titled “That’s What We Wanted”, they’ve immediately checked all of our boxes for what we consider great, especially for a first delivery in which so much more is coming. Chances are this is your introduction to the band, so please take our word for it, this is a song worth listening to.
Rooted in indie rock, but already etching out a signature sound and niche of their own, Dogboy waste no time whatsoever setting the tone for a song that ultimately felt like a blast of nostalgia with modern elements all at once. Hitting euphoric nonstop highs through the vocals and its cadence, the band is delicately backed up by a powerhouse of instrumentation that thumps right along and courses energy and optimism throughout the listener’s body. Though we feel that surf rock is 100% an underrated genre, they’ve taken the blueprints of something so great and infused it with a bunch of different styles to create something of their own. In today’s musical landscape, that’s a complete rarity, but we love to see it.
Though the instrumentals are obviously great, they also haven’t lacked in the slightest lyrically. Dogboy has said this track is “about how relationships change. It’s not a good or a bad thing, just a fact of life”. Whether you apply their words to romantic relationships or even friendships, chances are you’ve been in a situation where things have turned for the worse. We think the message and themes are certainly up for interpretation, but in the coming months as the band shares more music, we’ll be diving a bit deeper into how they continue to craft.
In the meantime, we’re urging everyone out there to click the links below to listen, follow along, and of course to stay tuned for all updates and new info.
