DAYANA delivers a powerhouse vocal performance on new single, "The Real Me"
Review by Austin Sher
For her second single released in 2020, DAYANA is officially back with her incredible new song, “The Real Me”. Please read along with us as we give an in-depth look into what we thought of the song, as well as a bit of background on the project.
Before we get into the music side of the songs, we’d love for you to become a bit more familiar with who DAYANA is and how she get to where she is today. DAYANA is Scottish and Colombian vocal powerhouse writing and performing with her talented band members. She proudly grew up in one of the most destitute areas of Edinburgh, but DAYANA's voice gave her wings that from her humble home brought her to London. So far, they have released their first two singles and EP. DAYANA have played in various venues in London including: Fiddler’s Elbows twice, Hootananny Brixton, Camden Assembly, Notting Hill Arts Club and a famous rock bar at the Bannerman;s in Edinburgh. They have also recently performed at 3 Sofar Sounds and will be the main support for the band Wishbone Ash in October 2020.
If this just so happens to be your first foray into the world of DAYANA, you’ve jumped on at the perfect time. What we experienced on “The Real Me” was, for lack of a better word, so “real” and thought provoking, that our jaws were nearly left on the floor as the song finished up. What starts out with a subtle guitar and refrained vocals, quickly turns into an absolute stunner of a single.
The overall vocals on the song are as strong as ever. What you don’t realize in the beginning is that the buildup is coming, with an absolute explosion in both sound and vocal range to wrap things up. You get tricked in the first half, with the calming and almost serene lyrics being spoken to you. By the end you need a seatbelt to strap in the emotions that are being delivered through your headphones.
While the vocals are the obvious standout, let’s not forget the diverse and intriguing instrumentation featured from start to finish. The guitar tones are quite ominous themselves, but as the track goes on the guitar picks up and forays into an almost metal sounding tone that fits the vibe perfectly. While you’ll need to listen for yourself, the last 45 seconds of this song are pure perfection and are sure to cause shivers down your spine. We highly recommend multiple listens. Needless to say, we loved what we heard and we can’t wait to continue to follow DAYANA’s career!
