Dareo bares his soul on his introspective new single, "On My Mind"
Review by Austin Sher
Released recently on September 11th, 2020, Dareo Knott has debuted yet another successful 2020 hit, titled “On My Mind”. Do yourselves a favor and read along for our review of the track and a brief look into the artist himself.
Packed and stacked with monolithic high and low harmonies, Dareo has raised the bar to new heights for future and upcoming releases. Released on his birthday, Knott allowed listeners to connect and celebrate with him on his 21st. The track has already had comparisons to Al Green, with elements of 90’s R&B and a raw twist, the track’s success sets an atmosphere of lucidity.
Looking back on Dareo Knott’s life, he was raised by a foster family and has had struggles trusting people, abandonment, and neglect that has imprinted on his writing style. Recently losing his family to the Black Lives Matter movement after claiming that the family household became toxic and unbearable because of ongoing racism issues, has sparked a heartfelt and deeply empathic song; ‘On My Mind’.
Now that we’re well versed in the background of Dareo’s life and the inspirations behind this single, it’s time to talk music. As mentioned, the comparisons to Al Green can certainly be made, however on this track specifically we feel as though Dareo channeled his inner Frank Ocean. In our opinion, that’s quite the high compliment as it’s a tough sound to emulate. Seriously though, with the opening guitar picking, Dareo’s smooth vocal delivery, and a sense of drama, it has all the elements of a meaningful and life long single that we’ll all be able to look back on and appreciate.
What we liked most about the track, and this should be obvious, was how wonderful and original the vocal delivery was. Not only is it a beautiful sounding song, but Dareo convinces the listener to listen closely to the story that’s being told here. The song can be listened to in two separate ways. You can listen to it just because it’s pleasing to the ears, but it also is an introspective look into the life of someone you don’t know. A soul is being bared in “On My Mind”, you just have to listen closely and you might learn something.
With all this being said, we highly recommend and encourage you to take the time out of your day and listen, we promise you won’t be disappointed that you did.
