Released over the past month, Cristobal Dion has officially debuted a brand new EP, Assassinas. Such an interesting concept! Please read along for our thoughts on the record, in addition to a background on its origin and the artist as well.

For those who may not know, Cristobal Dion is based in Montreal, Canada, and is currently making music under the genres Trip Hop, World Music, Jazz, Tribal Fusion and Downtempo. After working several years in the music industry as a sound engineer and being burned out, he stopped listening to music for 2 years before finding again a new passion for music. This new and vivid passion emerged while travelling to exotic places and learning sultry-sounding languages.

Multiculturalism, Exotism and Drama are recurring themes in his universe. His release schedule is quite impressive as he releases one 4-track EP every two months following a fantasy theme on his own website (www.cristobaldion.com). Assassinas covers the story of 4 female assassins, Scarlett, Sue Xing, Mitsu and Catrina, all sent to end the life of our hero, Cristobal Dion. In this passionate and intense EP, each song covers the story of one Assassina. Scarlett, Mitsu, Sue Xing and Catrina have different backgrounds, stories, motives and emotions. The 4 Assassinas approach their duty with very different perspectives.

To begin, this is absolutely one of the most diverse and unique concepts for a record we’ve come across, but that just made us love it all the more. Over the course of its runtime, an immense amount of genres are visited. Some are instantly recognizable, but some also take a closer ear to really hear what the artist is creating. Seeing that all of the music is instrumental, with the addition of voice overs by four different female artists, it is absolutely a collaboration record worth checking out.

While this was our first foray into the music of Cristobal Dion, it’s absolutely not going to be our last. We don’t want to give too much away, because we’d much prefer you’d listen, but this is a truly unique project he’s created here. As mentioned, it’s out of the box for the typical releases we see, but a serious breath of fresh air to see something that brings a whole new meaning to the word innovative. As soon as our first listen was finished, we had to go back and check out the other music in his discography. We’d recommend you do the same!

With this all being said, if you’re looking for something a bit more experimental in your life. Something a little more off the cuff as well, then please go ahead and listen.
