Colorado folk artist Cole Scheifele has just released the third single “Company Clothes” off of his forthcoming record, The Hideaways. Here he’s singing about feeling trapped and stuck in the routine of a job that is unfulfilling or not true to who we are, creating a character that most of us can identify with to some extent. Of the three he’s shared, we think this might just be the best so far.
On the single, Scheifele says, “They sort of gnaw at us quietly and we bury them and then they break open and get real big and then they soften again,” Having been in a similar job and life situation, it’s not overly difficult to relate to the lyricism here, which is one the main reasons why we’ve resonated with the single so much, so quickly.
Instrumentally, this is just the type of somber tone that we were hoping he’d go in given the circumstances and themes being covered. While the production features lush soundscapes amongst an expansive sound, there’s still a great deal of intimacy presented overall. The artist is speaking directly to those who will listen, but in a way that feels like a casual conversation. It’s quite a different style, but one that when done correctly, rises above the rest in terms of quality.
As The Hideaways preps itself to be released, we’re just going to continuously be listening over and over to the singles that have been shared. They’re all unique in their own ways, featuring their own charms, but there really was something special about “Company Clothes”. For those discovering Cole’s music for the first time, this certainly wouldn’t be a bad place to start. However we do have the feeling that once you do listen, you won’t want to stop.
