Freshly released on September 9th, 2022, Carter Ray has delivered a lyrically impressive and richly produced new song called “SCARS” in which he gives listeners an honest glimpse into some personal experiences of his life. Sounding extremely proud in his vocal cadence, he’s managed to infuse a ton of different genres and styles for something that has ended up feeling completely unique. As this was our introduction to the artist as a whole, we didn’t quite know what to expect, but we’ve left as fans and can’t wait for everyone to click the play button here.
Described as an “electric power anthem”, we can confidently claim that goal has been achieved in the sonic nature of how this track was composed. Now while “SCARS” certainly has a ton of fun and shiny elements to it, we couldn’t help but innately focus on its message and what Carter was trying to get across. According to him, he’s said, “both mental and physical scars are scattered across all of us, weighing heavy on our hearts, infiltrating our minds and consuming our happiness to feed the ego. It projects themes of acceptance, being who you want to be, and living a judgement free life.
Putting the message aside for just a moment though, there was definitely not a lack of funky hooks and grooves blended in to make this one stand out. While it’s rooted in electronic music, there’s a ton of different pop and alternative elements that show themselves to give off that well rounded feeling and cast a wide net of who could enjoy this. Carter’s vocals are authentic, genuine, and downright euphoric in the way that he exclaims these words, but there’s more than enough bounciness to keep you glued for other reasons. Undoubtedly, we already know we’re going to be exploring the rest of his work. While this is just his third overall single, we’re already patiently waiting for a follow up!
