Brenda Carsey releases her summer-ready single, "Scroll Click"
Review by Austin Sher
Los Angeles, California based artist, Brenda Carsey, has just shared her brand new single, “Scroll Click”. Read along with us for an in-depth review into what we thought of the track, as well as a bit of background information surrounding the musician behind the song.
Brenda Carsey is certainly not a stranger to the world of music. Since the age of 5 she’s been studying and performing music in all different mediums including choirs, orchestras, marching bands, and so much more. While she does perform in a band, “Scroll Click” was a project from Carsey’s solo side. If you’re a Los Angeles native like ourselves, you may have seen her perform The Teragram Ballroom (opening for Chris Ayer), The Hotel Cafe (headlined), The Bootleg Theater (opening for Karmic), The Moroccan Lounge (co-headlining with Livingmore), The Satellite, Harvard & Stone (headlined + residency) and more.
Now that we’ve learned a bit more about Carsey, let’s get into the music! According to the artist, "Scroll Click" is an Alternative Hip Hop track inspired by the observation of societal addiction to social media. It is a track inspired by the falsehood of associating your worthiness as a human being with being ‘popular’ ‘famous’ or ‘important' based on numeric value alone. It is a track inspired by how the ethereal, invisible magic of music has been forced and squashed into a huge visual box for easier consumption. It is a track inspired by how deceiving looks can be in the manicured reality of social media and how participation in this false reality can not only lead to depression but how it can also lead one to check out from participating in actual reality. It is a track inspired by the dark realities and injustices happening constantly all around us. I created “Scroll Click” for myself to release thoughts and feelings of sadness, anger, and frustration.
Honestly, we couldn’t have said it better ourselves. Considering we’re all so collectively glued to our phones all the time, it’s necessary to take a step back at times and take a deep breath. While the beat on the track is certainly classic, the lyrics are really what hits home the most. With this song hitting the right person’s ears and getting shared, I can definitely see this one coming up on the radio. On its surface it feels like a fun track you can listen to with a group of friends cruising the highway, but when you dig into the lyrics and themes, it becomes so much more.
Overall, we really enjoyed the track and it immediately went onto all of our summer playlists. It’s a fun song that deserves to be listened to in a setting with friends, preferably by the beach. If you can safely do so, we say go for it!
