Aurore Sibley shares her folksy debut album, Book of Song

Review by Austin Sher

Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Aurore Sibley, has put forth her wonderful debut album, Book of Song. Read along with us as we take you through our review of what we thought about the record, as well as a bit of background on the artist herself.

Currently based out of California, Aurore Sibley is creating compositions and vocal stylings ranging from folk and indie pop or rock, to blues and jazz. Her current collection of songs features her on keyboards, guitar, bass and mandolin, as well as all vocal tracks. All songs on Book of Song were composed, performed, recorded, and produced by Aurore. When she’s not creating impeccable music, she spends time writing as an author, as well as a healing arts professional. In fact, Aurore's writing has appeared in Midwestern Gothic, The Molotov Cocktail Award Anthology and Lilipoh magazine as well as various small presses and online publications. Her poetry and prose is forthcoming in The Halcyone and Black Mountain Press's "The 64 Best Poets of 2019" and her poetry chapbook, "The Heart is Not a Pump"was published in 2017 by Finishing Line Press and is available online and at Bookshop Santa Cruz.

For now, let’s shift our focus to the music she’s created, after all, that’s why you’re here right? Coming in at a runtime of 32 minutes across 10 original songs, Aurore Sibley has crafted a beautiful piece of indie folk that we thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish. While the instrumentation on the record is quite diverse, the real standout were Sibley’s vocals. We were quite fond of her performances on the opener “In Salinas”, “Not Afraid To Stay”, and “Only You My Friend”.

We experienced a wide range of emotions on the record as well. The lyrics certainly hit deep on the topics and themes she covered. If you’re looking for a calming, intriguing, and highly original body of work, Book of Song is the album for you. I’d like to imagine listening to this while sitting in a hammock overlooking a sunset or even just cruising down the highway with the windows down. It certainly produced a broad range of emotions that could be experienced in any setting. Overall, we really did enjoy what we heard on this record, and any appreciation of indie acoustic originals should prove that you will too.
