Spoon Tears Through the Classics at Austin City Limits Performance
At approximately the hottest part of the day, the crowd showed up in droves to witness the hometown heroes Spoon take the Honda Stage at Austin City Limits Festival. Marking it as a big deal given they’ve reached legendary status, we were there front and center to recount the afternoon set that legitimately felt larger than life. Read on for our full review below.
Having been major Spoon fans for the better part of 15 years now, we can’t believe it took this long to finally see the band play a live show. Honestly though, there would be almost no better place on the planet to witness it all go down than at a hometown set while the crowd went certifiably wild to see it happen. Although they were only given an hour slot to play hit after hit, they took advantage with minimal downtime. Ripping through the classics off of albums like Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga and They Want My Soul, it was an all out singalong during the higher moments. Once those horns kicked in on “The Underdog”, it felt like a group experience we’d be remembering forever.
As of lately though, the band has been on a total tear in terms of releases. We were thrilled to finally check out the songs from Lucifer on the Sofa, a severely underrated record that wasn’t shared too long ago. They threw in a cover from John Lenon which was unexpected, but the crowd quickly became fans as we sung back the words to “Isolation”. Seriously all this time has passed as these indie rock saints have been on one global tour after the other and it still feels like they don’t get the credit that they deserve. Touring extensively is one thing, but it’s even been said that Spoon is your favorite band’s favorite band, or at least that’s what Japanese Breakfast said while playing on a different stage at the festival.
Truly, it was a moment in time that we all ate up and it’s almost difficult to put into words otherwise, the experience was just fantastic. If Spoon ever comes to a city near you, let us urge you to buy a ticket as soon as you possibly can. Enjoy!
