Julien Baker, Angel Olsen, & Sharon Van Etten Bring "Wild Hearts" to LA's Greek Theatre
Last night at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles was undoubtedly one for the memory books. Getting together for their Wild Hearts tour, we got to witness music royalty as Julien Baker, Angel Olsen, and Sharon Van Etten hit the stage separately for what legitimately felt like a mini music festival. Thankfully we were there front and center to recount the night, so please enjoy our full review and photo gallery attached below.
Where to even start when you’re not even five feet away from some of your favorite artists in the world! Well, Julien Baker kicked off the night and we finally got to witness our most anticipated tracks off of Little Oblivions in person. She started off her set with our personal favorite “Sprained Ankle” and it only get better with time. The thing about these three artists is that they lead with emotional vocals, and while it would have been incredible just hearing it all acapella, their respective bands stepped in for powerhouse instrumental performances that sent everything over the edge. Although Julien was the first of three to come out, her crowd showed up big with multiple applauses, screams, and more.
Next up was Angel Olsen, who we’ve gotten to see in the past, but absolutely brought her A game for one of the most stellar and profound performances of the night. While her set was certainly filled with her signature slow burning ballads, she stepped it up energy wise in moments on “Shut Up Kiss Me” and even some real standouts on her latest record, Big Time. One unexpected moment and experience from her set was that at times it felt like stand up comedy, which was much appreciated through the quieter and more intense moments between songs. Her band deserves special mention because they crushed it! Featuring a full string section plus “normal” instrumentation, they added such a real complexity to her music that can only be translated in a live setting. To sum it up, an out of this world performance.
Closing up the night was Sharon Van Etten who brought her signature edge and rock spirit to the stage! We had never seen her before, only listening to her albums, but wow she brought the energy that the entirety of the show truly needed. It’s one thing to experience her music in a record, but the way that it translates to a theater of 7,500 was transcendent. She played songs off of her newest album We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong and to no surprise, they hit just as hard. Being literal feet away from her during the first three songs of our photo shoot was a memory we’ll hold forever, but honestly the whole show was empowering and memorable almost beyond words.
Lastly, if you’ve yet to experience any music from any of these artists, you’ve sorely been missing out! Go ahead and please listen as soon as you can, we promise you’ll become new fans!
