The Tear Downs rip and roar on debut record "Open Air Cellars"

Review by Austin Sher

Recently debuted worldwide, The Tear Downs have officially shared their first full length record, Open Air Cellars, and we are loving it! Do yourselves a favor and read along with us for our full review of the album, in addition to a background on the band as well.

For those unaware, The Tear Downs are made up of Steve Geraci (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Dan Maranci (guitarist/vocalist) Mike Green (drummer), Alan Shapiro (guitar), Jason Hornick (keyboards, vocals), and Chris Martin (bass). Together, this Needham, MA band have successfully composed a crossover record featuring genres such as power pop, indie rock, alternative, and glimmers of experimentation as well.

Based off of our first listen of Open Air Cellars, this is one of the most cohesive sounding records that come across our path in quite a while. From start to finish, it certainly shows off a wide variety of genres, however, The Tear Downs have put a signature sound on it that distances themselves from the rest of similar acts producing similar sounds.

Coming in at 11 songs, spanning 36 wonderful minutes, there was a lot to unpack here that wasn’t just their diverse instrumentation. Between the soaring guitar riffs frequently included, there was also a bit of a deeper aspect to it within their lyricism. While it sounds like most of the stories being told are personal, it wasn’t hard to relate with in the slightest. It opened the door into the lives of these 6 rockers, and we absolutely need more listens to unpack it all.

As far as production goes, it was absolutely top notch, considering veteran rocker and producer Dave Minehan (The Neighborhoods, Replacements) cemented his guitar drive and thoughtful harmony balance throughout. After 8 long months of safe trips to the studio, he finally uncovered this beauty that we’ll continue to listen to for the rest of the year.

While it would be quite difficult to pick a favorite song off the record, we definitely had our favorites. Specifically the album opener “Another Quick One”, “Next Half Life”, “You Don’t Know”, and the slightly psychedelic closer “Inside the Glass Eye”. All fantastic songs that deserve your close attention. Now that’s not to say the rest fell flat, because they did not, but like any listen there’s always those that make you want to give repeat listens. Anyway, we highly recommend and encourage you to listen from front to back!
