The Secret Truth of the Universe share their stellar shoegaze EP, "Jubilee"

Released earlier in 2020, The Secret Truth of the Universe have released yet another stellar EP, titled Jubilee. Read along with us as we break down our thoughts on the record, as well as a bit of background on the artist as well.
Based out of Dallas, Texas, The Secret Truth of the Universe is a shoegaze project headed by Juan Vargas. Although he’s not formally trained, he let us know that he tends to record melodies that are in his head and tries to expand on them from there. The songs on Jubilee, however, were written and recorded within a three year period. It was difficult for him to execute and record the songs on the EP as they came from a place of darkness and self-destruction.
What you’re getting specifically on this release are 6 songs of bedroom pop/dream pop and shoegaze with ambient tracks mixed in as interludes. Although it only comes in at 13 minutes total runtime, the impact it had on us was quite immense. Seeing as the record comes from a very personal place in Juan’s life, it really hit that much harder in sound and lyricism. The mix of ambient tracks and straightforward shoegaze played very nice together as well. In terms of pacing the record out, it was nice to have that subtle switch between the genres.
Shoegaze as a whole these days is a long forgotten about genre that hasn’t quite seen the revival that we’d like it to. Most of the bigger acts who have been around since the 90’s tend to carry the weight of the genre. Considering it’s one of our favorite genres of music to listen to, it’s so refreshing and nice to hear a proper release like this that really steps it up. Seriously, if more people were familiar with music like this, it might actually catch on. We’re thankful for what Juan has brought to us here and we truly can’t wait to see what else is on its way.
