Incredibly infectious through its vivid lyricism and inventive instrumentation, The One Tonic has leaned heavily on a complex production to bring “Richest Man Alive” to life. As this was our introduction to this Salt Lake City-based artist, we didn’t quite know what to expect, but he’s left us feeling positive with the urge to explore everything else he’s made so far. Needless to say, this is both a musician and a song we’re recommending everyone check out immediately.
On the background of it all, “Richest Man Alive” was inspired by real life events that are extremely hard to relate to if you haven’t experienced it yourself. The artist says, “Years ago, we lost almost everything when my wife had cancer. Even though it was brutal, it made me appreciate how rich I actually was. I had my family”. Ultimately that “feeling” is about how great it is to have a caring family, no matter your financial situation. It was released purposely around Thanksgiving, a difficult time for so many who might be alone. If you’re in the market for a shoulder to lean on or really just something to confide in, it’s this type of music and messaging that should do the trick.
Now while everything going on sonically perfectly fits the vibe of the track, our major standout has to be the vocal delivery. Not only is it anthemic in the sense that you want to sing along with the chorus by the end, but the sheer passion in delivery is enough to make you tune in closer. Now knowing the background and what spurred its creation, everything feels tied together in terms of how this was composed and executed. While it definitely falls somewhere under the rock genre, it sort of transcends style and has become its own thing in our opinion. We love it for everything it represents and again, cannot wait for everyone to listen.
