The Northeast Collective deliver a grand new single with the release of "Lafayette"

Review by Austin Sher

Released this past week on August 7th, 2020, The Northeast Collective had put forth their rocking new single, titled “Lafayette”. Please read along with us as we give our in-depth thoughts into what we thought of the track, as well as some background on the roots of the band.

The Northeast Collective is mainly put together by Christopher Prestamo who has brought forth a collective of musicians from the northeast part of the United States, hence the name of the band. The band is mainly put together by members Ryan Albrecht, Michael LaRocco (on lead guitar), Daniel LaRocco (bass guitar), Jeremiah Titone (on drums), Elisha LaRocco (backing vocals), Luke Keating (on keys), and so many more. Having a sort of open ended band gives the opportunity for so many incredible iterations of music, the capabilities are endless. Surely the band has proved themselves in terms of impressing with this current lineup.

When you first listen to the song, there are plenty of influential artists that you might hear that remind you of the song playing. The band cites their influences as City and Colour, Bear’s Den, Death Cab For Cutie, Mumford & Sons, Bon Iver, John Mayer, and more. Our first impressions were that this could 100% have been a track from Mumford & Sons, as it supports all the elements of their music, except The Northeast Collective put a very intriguing spin on things.

Onto the music now, if you’re in the mood for a slow burner of an indie rock jam, “Lafayette” is the single for you. Seriously, we’ll admit we had high expectations going in, but after listening multiple times through to the near 4 minute track, our expectations were blown out of the water. As big fans of the genre, we always set the bar a bit higher when it comes to songs like these, but it features all the elements of music we’re looking for.

You’ll find grooving bass lines, wonderful rhythm guitar sections, and booming & flawless vocals. Bringing a collective of musicians together who all excel on their instruments in their own right is always a bit of a risk. Seeing as the musicians may be swapped out frequently, you can’t always expect the same things to come out of a song, but in this case, they truly knocked it out of the park.

Considering “Lafayette” was our first foray into the band, it got us even more excited for their 2 EP’s releasing in Fall 2020 and Winter 2021. We hope there will be more teaser tracks on the way, but for now, we’re sitting pretty with this song. All in all, we highly recommend you give it a listen or two, you won’t regret it!
