The Flyleaves craft an upbeat indie pop sound on new record, "I Don't Know"
Review by Austin Sher
Closing out the year with yet another wonderful release, The Flyleaves (also known as Cooper Hair) is back with a brand new album titled I Don’t Know. We’re loving it! Please read along with us for our full review on the album, in addition to a refresher on the artist himself.
In case you don’t remember, it wasn’t too long ago that we covered The Flyleaves’ self titled EP. Thankfully, the artist is back with another record to close out 2020 called I Don’t Know, and let us tell that we are in love. The Flyleaves is the creation of 20 year old Brisbane, Australia artist, Cooper Hair. He writes, performs, records, produces and mixes his own music all within the inside of his bedroom.
As a self-taught drummer, Cooper wanted to expand his range of musical abilities and taught himself how to play the Bass guitar, which then slowly progressed into wanting to learn how to play the standard 6 string guitar. Along the way of teaching himself how to play these instruments, Cooper found interest in songwriting and set his goals to writing his own original songs which ultimately began the journey that led him to where he is today as The Flyleaves!
Once you get through your first listen, you should probably know that Cooper recorded, produced, and mixed the entire album through GarageBand on his iPad. With that knowledge, the album just becomes that much more impressive, seriously, what an impeccable feat and advancement of technology to be able to do such a thing. With that being said though, from start to finish, this record is an absolute masterpiece in terms of originality and uniquity.
Coming in at 7 songs, spanning 20 minutes in run time, there’s only one true complaint we had...we wish it were longer! Other than that, it’s purely perfect and upbeat indie pop that showcases the many talents of Cooper Hair. His bass playing, guitar skills, and vocal abilities have all progressed so wonderfully since his EP was released. We were hoping more would be released from the artist before years end, so we’re thrilled our wishes were granted.
We don’t want to spoil anything on the record, so we’ll just recommend that you take the time out of your days and listen to it in full. Truly it’s a wonderful piece of work that strikes so many positive chords and put a genuine smile on our faces. The lush sounds of acoustic guitar are sure to relax and calm the listener. So do yourselves a favor and get listening!
