Synesthema has officially released his otherworldly debut record, "Starlust"

Review by Austin Sher

Shared with the world yesterday on November 11th, 2020, Synesthema has released to this world his otherworldly debut record, Starlust. Do yourselves a favor and read along with us for our break down of the album, in addition to some insight on the artist behind the music.

For the uninitiated, Synesthema is the project of Jonathan Sardelis, an upcoming independent electronica (progressive trance) musician from Montreal, Canada. His music can be described as a mixture of “electronic dance music (EDM) beats, rhythmic basses, transporting melodies, progressive song structures and a high science-fiction aesthetic”. While you’ll be able to hear it within the music, Synesthema is directly Inspired and influenced by artists such as Beat Market, Ilan Bluestone, Elysian, Above & Beyond, Deadmau5, Super8 & Tab, Vintage & Morelli, and Gabriel & Dresden.

We got a chance to catch up with the artist prior to the release and he filled us in on some key pointers that you should know before fully diving in. According to Synesthema, “The album offers a 1 hour journey into music made for either dancing or contemplation. The tracks, sitting at around 110-125 bpm (with some exceptions), are carried by powerful basslines and EDM dance beats, complex and luscious synths, compelling chords, and feature many variations within the same track”.

It should go without saying, but after our first listen, our immediate reactions were just how blown away we were at this being the first major output of music from the artist. I mean seriously, listen for yourselves, but the overall production quality and world created with Starlust sounds like something a seasoned veteran of music would be releasing late into their career, not as a debut. Now please don’t take that as a dig to the artist, we honestly mean it in the most sincere and uplifting way possible. We’re impressed and think you will be too.

Now we have to be outright and honest here, this genre of music isn’t something that we listen to regularly. However, our high praise should only mean more in the context that we know good music when it comes to us. This is 100% the type of music we can get down to, and will. At a touch under an hour in runtime, this is the perfect record to put on if you’re driving at night, studying, or even to have on in a party setting. It’s dynamic in the sense that it quickly proves its versatility with how many different styles are being presented throughout the listen.

Honestly, we’re not sure what else to say here without giving too much information or spoiling. Here’s what we will say though, if you’re even remotely into EDM as a whole or are just looking to expand your horizons musically, stop what you’re doing and put this on immediately. You absolutely will not be disappointed. There isn’t a bad track throughout the entire listen, which has only gotten us even more excited for whatever else the artist is going to release throughout his career. No rush though!
