Sully lights it up on colorful debut EP, "Aura"

Freshly released in the month of May, we’re thrilled because Sully has just put out an incredibly catchy debut EP titled Aura. Please read along with us as we share our complete thoughts on the album, in addition to a background on the artist as well.

Currently representing the Brooklyn music scene, Sully is a pop singer and songwriter who’s passion comes through as clear as day, especially on  his debut EP, Aura. Taking influences by soulful and fiery singers such as Sam Smith, Christina Aguilera, and Haddaway, Sully has definitely carved a niche of his own on this first release. We couldn’t help but fall in love with it instantly.

Coming in at a total of four soulful tracks, spanning 15 minutes in length, Aura has expertly fused genres spanning dance, disco, and pop, but with some serious heartfelt moments sprinkled in as well. Getting to know Sully as an artist and person was an absolute treat as well. According to him, he’s always been nontraditional in his life, wearing makeup and feminine clothing since high school, babysitting and being a nurturing force to his younger siblings, and participating in activities such as dance and music that often led to shame and ridicule by his peers.

His music as a whole directly touches on the feelings of isolation, pain, and hatred that comes with men who break away from toxic masculinity and choose a path of expression that is unmasculine, androgynous, and queer. Capitalizing on so many complex themes and deep lyricism on Aura is what made us give a closer listen, but there were also so many redeeming parts and production techniques that have implored us to give repeated listens as well.

To be honest, there isn’t a single negative piece of criticism we could give here. The pros on Aura are at an all time high. Some of our favorite moments were just flawlessly so many genres were featured here. On the opener and title track “Aura”, you immediately are thrown into Sully’s world in which you’re propelled to dance and have a good time. As the record goes on though, a sincere heaviness comes in and the artist relies a lot more on imagery-filled lyricism that confidently tells his story as an artist and human being. There’s a ton of juxtaposition featured here, but in a way that represents true artistry.

For a debut piece of music, Sully has knocked it out of the park beyond comprehension. You’d think that because of how complete and cohesive it was, this would’ve been coming from a seasoned veteran, however that’s what makes us even more excited for what can be expected in the near future. It should probably go without saying, but this is a record that we are highly recommending. We hope you love it!
