Sam Phelps crafts a meaningful new EP, "Talking To A Friend"

Kicking the year off with a lovely sounding EP titled Talking To A Friend, Sam Phelps has yet again continued to impress us. Please read along with us as we break down our thoughts on the record, as well as a background on the artist as well.

Kentucky born, but now representing the Brooklyn music scene, Sam Phelps is a singer and songwriter who’s deep love for all things country, bluegrass, Americana, and folk have led him down the path to a career in music. With songs filled with personal life stories, Sam is succeeding in crafting a country sound that is helping to reshape what the genre is all about.

The blend of his Kentucky country roots and now current day life in New York have made for something truly unique on Talking To A Friend. Featuring three heartfelt tracks, spanning a little over 10 minutes in run time, Sam has managed to create a true piece of beauty that any lover of music would be able to appreciate.

So much of the music we cover is diverse in the sense that the artists are doing their best to change things up. This is no different in the slightest. For an overall country sounding instrumentation, Sam’s actual vocal delivery isn’t what you’d expect from a stereotypical country artist. Sure, it’s rugged in tone, but at the same time it’s vastly more refined than what you’d normally hear in today’s modern music. However you can interpret it, we’re absolutely loving it.

While picking out a favorite song out of the three song run would be next to impossible, we’ll just implore the reader to do yourself the biggest favor of all and check it out from start to finish. Be your own judge and let the artist know how you felt, we’re sure he’d love the feedback.

What we will say though is that instrumentally, the record is an absolute powerhouse of originality. Again, it does have that country feel to it, but the essence in which everything was orchestrated has a feel to it that is signature to the artist. Having loved what we heard and going back to check out his previous discography, it’s the obvious yet expected evolution of how we’d expect this to sound.

Overall though, it should really go without saying that we’ve absolutely adored what we’ve heard on Talking To A Friend, and we think you will too! Lastly, the only thing you’ll need to do at this point is give it a listen. Enjoy!
