Rick Christian displays complex thoughts & production on single, "Deranged Machine"
Kicking his 2023 into high gear, Rick Christian has shared yet another perplexing and complexly layered new single titled “Deranged Machine”. Do yourselves a favor and read on for our thought on the track, as well as an update on the artist.
Rick Christian has been consistently all over our radar throughout the past six months or so, and for great reason, because this multi-talented artist hasn’t stopped revolutionizing his sound. For this Edmonton-based alternative, electronic, and dark dance-based artist, his newest endeavor is a dense new single titled “Deranged Machine” in which he’s somehow managed to increase the production value. Obviously, we’re highly recommending you give this one a listen.
On the background of “Deranged Machine”, Rick Christian always infuses a ton of meaning and depth into his sound. As impressive as his catalog has become on the instrumental and production end as previously mentioned, what’s making his music so well rounded are the themes he continues to dive into. Particularly, this one looks within the “dark feelings and demons rising like a phoenix, acknowledging what he has become feels so unreal. Life can shape a person negatively”. We’ve got a feeling that the “machine” is the world and sort of hamster wheel that life has become and trying to make it out to the other side or feel moments of peace is increasingly difficult as we all collectively experience these rapid mood swings and changes. For us lyrically, we do feel that he’s left things open ended up and for interpretation.
However, where Rick’s music shines the most is in its constant flux and blending of sounds that legitimately keep you on your toes. There’s an atmospheric, ethereal, and industrial-inspired beat that cuts through like a knife. Pulsating beats create a low flying anxiety as the song pumps through, but truly the reprieve of it all are his vocals that thankfully are the lightest thing about “Deranged Machine”. Context and meaning aside, it’s the delivery and cadence projected that makes you feel like everything is going to be quite alright in the end. Once again though, it’s a real heavy hitter of a track from an artist who’s fulfilling his vision.
