Write, Record, Release and then what? A Q&A with Whiplash PR For Indies

Taking a moment from her busy schedule to answer our hard hitting questions regarding modern day PR in the music industry, we were lucky enough to chat with Rhonda from Whiplash PR For Indies. To learn a little bit more about her process and approach to the music industry, do yourselves a favor and check out our in-depth Q&A below.

Who are you and what's your experience in music/marketing?

I am an indie music publicist that works with bands and musicians around the world. Many people that I talk with are not sure what the difference is between a publicist or a publisher. A publicist gets their client national press pieces such as reviews, features and interviews in print magazines, webzines, podcasts, blogs. We do not do anything with the radio. When you want to get your new music out there, get exposure and validation for the musician and the music, you outsource a publicist. I started in 1998 before indie was cool. When you pay a publicist, you are actually paying for their contacts and connections they have made over 2 decades. You can try to do it yourself and do a pay for play deal. But, those we are trying to impress..licensing agents, publishers, festival bookers etc etc know the difference.

What kinds of artists do you represent?

I have clients now from Sweden, South Africa, Panama, France, Canada & the USA. Having stayed in our lane for 26 years, musicians know our experience and we have built a reputation for getting a new releases or any kind of release major exposure.  I am very approachable and love a good chat. If the music is good and I think I can be successful with them, then it's a match. In general, I do not work with artists that come under these genres: Classical, Spoken Word, Jazz, Hip Hop & Rap.

What's your plan within music for 2024?

To continue searching for the best music I can find . Keep press releases short and tight, branch out to the newer magazines, blogs and webzines. If a major magazine wants to do a  interview with one of my clients and he wants to put the zoom call interview on the front page, for example. That would mean doing a test run with my client, organizing the date and time of the interview and helping them with what kind of questions they will be asked and then I make the interview only 10 minutes. The attention span these days is almost non existent.

What are some milestones/accolades you've achieved within your career?

I don't know. Lasting for 26 years. I am not one to talk about my achievements.

Where can people find you to represent them?
