Paid to Pretend craft a completely immersive single, "Girl Like Me"
Back with their first single release since 2020, Paid to Pretend have just put forth an intoxicatingly bold new single titled ‘Girl Like Me”. Please read on for a closer look at the track, in addition to a background on the band.
Currently representing the music scene in Mobile, Alabama, Paid to Pretend are an indie rock and soul band formed back in 2017. Made up of Michael Beatty, Matt Howl, Trey Nobles, Perry Moran, and Madison Bolt, the five piece have put together an exotic sounding track jam packed with heart that they’ve titled “Girl Like Me”. It’s their first release in a while, but we’re already hoping for a follow up because this one is an absolute beauty from start to finish.
Getting out there and playing shows, now consistently releasing music, and working on their following, we’ve got every reason to believe that the only direction Paid to Pretend are headed is up. Kicking things off on “Girl Like Me” with an instrumental bang, almost bordering on psychedelic undertones, you’re met head on with Madison’s vocals that are simply divine immediately. The soul comes from the passion in her voice, but you can effortlessly hear each band member ooze love in every note and chord that they put out.
At nearly five minutes in runtime, the song does the complex job of building suspense within its subtle pauses and causing drama-like elements in its production. While they’re certainly pumping out rock-based music, the ominous tones presented here are hopefully a sneak preview of what’s to come in the near future for the band. We’ve had the opportunity to listen to the rest of their discography, and there are plenty of gems, but this futuristic sound gives us hope for a complete reinvention of the genre. Whatever label you’d like to ultimately put on it, we can confidently claim that this is the type of music we enjoy in our personal time.
