!Noj shares a rhythmic new instrumental single, "smoky quartz"
Part of an all new EP coming from !Noj, this talent-filled artist has more than impressed us with the release of “smoky quartz”. Please keep reading for a closer look at the record, in addition to a background on the artist.
Just released on July 15th, 2022, !Noj has triumphantly showed off his production skills by creating a laidback jam that borders on meditative and ambient. The song is called “smoky quartz” but it’s part of an EP titled gems that also features another stellar single, “larimar”. Fully instrumental but jam-packed with memorable moments, this was our introduction to the artist’s work and it sincerely opened up the floodgates for further musical exploration.
At just a tad over two minutes in length, our only real “complaint” is that wish it were so much longer. The immersive feeling you experience right off the bat ended a lot sooner than we’d wished, but it led right into “larimar” that helped to soften the burn. With loads of tropical-esque drums and rhythmic basslines, !Noj presented a bunch of ideas that we’d like to see him capitalize on in future releases. According to the artist on the background of the song, he says, “this track is inspired by a gemstone trip I made with a friend not so long ago where we would find some nice stones and i came up with the idea to make a track based on our experience”.
We’ve said this in the past on reviews of fully instrumental tracks, but it stays true to this day. With the lack of lyricism, it really puts a pressure on the artist to deliver in ways that keep the listener’s attention going. With that being said, the amount of intricacies that are going on in the mix have more than made up for the lack of words or vocal melody. If anything, it’s challenged us to slow down and really pay attention to everything that’s going on. A recommendation here would be to enjoy this song, but with a nice pair of headphones due to the complexities in sound you’ll experience. There’s so much going on, so don’t miss it!
