Mourning Moon deliver big on stellar debut EP, "Spirit Animal"

Released earlier this year, but still just as fresh sounding today, we’re loving everything about the debut EP Spirit Animal coming from Mourning Moon. Keep reading as we share our complete thoughts on the record, in addition to a closer look into this emerging band.

Currently representing the music scene in Ruston, Louisiana, Mourning Moon are confidently putting together an eclectic mix of sounds, styles, and genres. Bridging the gap between alternative and hard rock, their debut EP is titled Spirit Animal and effortlessly shows off an insane amount of versatility from beginning to end. While this was our introduction to the band, they’ve left us feeling impressed, which is exactly why we’re urging everyone out there to give this a loud listen whenever possible.

Having had the opportunity to tour a large part of the South of the US this year, truly our first impression of listening to this record was how well it would translate in a live setting. Coming in at 5 total tracks that span right around 22 minutes in length, immediately it’s as though you’re being shot up with pure adrenaline as the instrumentation gets rowdy and the vocals make their way in with a certain edge and aggression. Specific songs like the opener and title track “Spirit Animal” as well as “FUFO” have this rawness and intimacy about them that are seriously hard to emulate, almost feeling like you’re right in the room with them. It’s definitely on the harder side of rock, a genre we prefer, but throughout the entirety of the EP, Mourning Moon shows tons of flexibility with the sounds that they’re capable of making.

With so much more coming in early 2023 in terms of singles, it’s going to be an interesting journey to see how they either evolve what they’ve put out thus far or further explore their niche. In our opinion, the base that they’ve shared features an insurmountable amount of talent that’s just waiting to be built on. Every song on this record is slightly different than the last, yet still manages to have a signature essence about it. While we patiently wait though, there’s no doubt this is going to be on repeat for the foreseeable future.
