Motel 86 crank out high powered 2nd LP, "Last Days"
Impressing yet again with a quick turnaround from their last record, we’re beyond thrilled because Motel 86 have just let loose another stunner titled Last Days. Please read along as we break down our thoughts on the album.
Following up their self-titled debut Motel 86, the band Motel 86 have reached new and greater heights on Last Days. Let's just say you’re not going to experience any amount of a sophomore slump on their second record. Dialing in their production, getting even better at their respective instruments, and leaning heavily on soaring guitar riffs was the perfect formula for another great output from a band that we love so much.
If this happens to be your introduction to this Redding, California-based rock band, you’ve stumbled upon literally the perfect time to hop on their bandwagon. There were infinite moments throughout this 18 minute listen that solidified it as great for us, but some of the highlights were certainly the instrumental opener “Trick or Treat” to set the mood, the screams on “Get Away”, and the back to back journey of “Last Days” and “Last Days, Pt. II”. Yes, we realized we just listed more than half of the record as highlights, which is all the more reason to just click play at the beginning and let it run on through to the final moments.
Another thing we need to mention here is the unbelievably quick turnaround times between albums. There could have been many factors, especially having the time due to continued lockdowns, however the writing and recording process of getting something out within 6 months of the last is beyond impressive. At this point we’re just hoping they continue on in the trend of biyearly records, we’ll still be listening without a doubt.
Truly, this is just another mind melting exploration into rock and roll with some serious psychedelic elements fused on as well. We found that the record relied a lot less on lyricism and a lot more on bombtastic instrumentation, which in our eyes is never a bad thing in the slightest. All we want to do is rock out, and this is certainly the record we’ll be coming back to when we want to do so.
