McKayla Prew explores her catchy debut single, "Fake Friends" - Interview

Storming out of the gates with an infectiously catchy debut single, “Fake Friends”, we got the opportunity to speak with the incredibly talented McKayla Prew all about it! Watch our full interview below.

For those not in the know, McKayla Prew is a singer, songwriter, and musical performer from Detroit, Michigan. Having won music competitions and also being a featured singer in the Hall of Fame Disney 'Dream, Big Princess' music video, she’s set out on her own and put out a debut single that is 100% worth your time and energy. We highly recommend all the listens of “Fake Friends”

In addition to her commanding vocals, she also plays six different instruments and has proved herself as a promising songwriter. The standout moments on the single are very obviously her vocals, which has us even more excited to listen to the follow up. Spoiler alert, but she’s got more singles on the way and a debut album with a release date that is currently TBD.

While you’ll hear the backstory if you watch the interview, we also got this quote from McKayla who explained the origins of the song. Says McKayla, "I wrote "Fake Friends" during my junior year of high school when I was having a hard time finding genuine friends. It’s about the hardships of high school and the difficulties trying to fit in with clique friend groups. In this song, I write about my personal experiences of being left out of plans with people I considered my best friends at the time. I also wrote this song to get through those experiences and in the end finding out that the only person I really need is myself. High school sucks, end of story."

For some it’s a relatable scenario to be in, and for others, well you’ll just have to listen and make the connections for yourself. All in all though, speaking with McKayla and getting to know her inside and out as we spoke about her musical process, inspirations, and more was an absolute treat. We have a sneaking suspicion that big things are on the way for this artist, which is why we’ll be keeping tabs and staying updated with each and every release.
