Officially released today on July 22nd, 2022, we got the special opportunity to sit and speak extensively with Mary Scholz all about her newest record, Begin Again. Please watch our full interview with the artist below.
For those out of the loop, Mary Scholz is a Los Angeles-based folk singer and songwriter who’s been consistently making waves with her fresh and innovative sound over the years. Following up her critically acclaimed EP Lonesome, her newest album Begin Again is an immersive listening experience that we’ve quickly fallen in love with. The cherry on top to the record’s release is our full conversation with Mary that broke down its production from Jonathan Wilson (Angel Olsen, Father John Misty), the meaning behind it all, and so many other wonderful topics.
Coming in at 10 total tracks, Mary Scholz has undoubtedly put together that coveted album experience that takes the listener on a stunning journey from start to finish. It’s an adventure through personal experiences and imagery-filled lyricism that makes you feel like you’re reliving it all with the artist. While we didn’t necessarily go track by track, Mary still gave an overarching message for the album’s meaning, so please don’t skip over that part in our discussion. Although we still recommend as the listener to attempt to make connections in her words as well, considering we all interpret things differently.
We touched on this during our chat, but another sincere recommendation would be to enjoy this album with a nice pair of headphones as the subtleties in the production make for an even bigger and grander sound. Jonathan Wilson is a master of his craft, as is the rest of the team who put the finishing touches on Begin Again. Even without the team though, the obvious focal point of the record is Mary herself who so effortlessly puts her all and originality into the album’s heart. Her vocals are silky smooth, the delivery is divine, and it’s easily her most mature work yet in our opinion.
